Back in my late 90s/early 2000s start-up days - the 'real' dotcom start-up days that can never be recreated (and that's prob a good thing haha) - it was almost like a badge of honor to burn out.

If you weren't burned out, if you didn't spend the night in the office, if you didn't eat, sleep, breathe, your next project or product launch...were you even a true dotcommer?

It was like a rite of passage to regale stories of how your last website launch almost killed you. It was just an understanding - your personal life was secondary. Your health was relegated to whatever you could find in a bottle (medicinal or otherwise).

Today, things have changed. I can't see how things could have kept going down the path that they were - it wasn't sustainable.

While there are still some industries that probably work their people to the ground, most seem to be behind the #selfcare movement.

In each of our podcast episodes I ask every entrepreneur, 'With everything you are juggling between business and personal life, what fuels you? What practices do you incorporate in your regular routine to keep going and avoid burn out?'

I did a training for our private Facebook group a few months ago on this very topic, sharing some of the answers given by these successful entrepreneurs. We're featuring the audio version here as our latest podcast episode.

I feel it's that important - if we are all going to carry on and build strong, sustainable businesses to serve the solution we set out to serve...we MUST take care of ourselves. And not just once in awhile, we've gotta do things that consistently refuel us.

What do you do to refuel? Send me a note at hello@musclecreative.com and let me know.

Welcome to the Small Business big mindset podcast. This week, we are chatting all about the non negotiable routines of successful entrepreneurs. Really, though these tips can help everyone juggling multiple priorities in life, not just entrepreneurs. In each of our podcast episodes, I asked every entrepreneur with everything you are juggling between business and personal life, what fuels you? What practices do you incorporate in your regular routine to keep going and avoid burnout? I did a training for our private Facebook group A few months ago on this very topic, sharing some of the answers given by the successful entrepreneurs. We're featuring the audio version here as our latest podcast episode. I feel it's that important. If we were all going to carry on and build strong, sustainable businesses to serve the solution we set out to serve. We must take care of ourselves. And not just once in a while we've got to do things that consistently refuel us. What do you do to refuel? Send me you know, to Hello at Muscle Creative, calm, and let me know for the full video training, head over to our Facebook group start and scale an online business hope you enjoy. Today, we're going to go over some practices that successful entrepreneurs have incorporated into their routines. So whether it's daily, weekly, whatever. We one of the questions we always ask in our small business, big mindset podcast is, what do you do? Like, what do you do to feed your mindset? What do you do to keep going because as you know, being an entrepreneur running a small business, it, it pulls you in a lot of directions, especially if you're first starting out, and you're wearing all the hats. It's like you're the marketer, you're the salesperson, you're the tech person. You're everything. And so it's a lot and there's that phrase, it's like, you know, how can you feel others cups if you're not feeling your own? And I completely agree with that. So, again, we asked that question in our podcasts, every single episode, we ask like, hey, you're handling a lot. What do you do to fuel yourself to keep going? I think it's super important. And I think that we're in this era where people are coming around two that used to be like, if you're not exhausted and burned out, you're lazy. You're not successful. And so it's like, now it's like people are like, Okay, wait a minute, I don't have to, like hate life, and hate what I'm doing and feel like I'm going to die, I can actually enjoy what I'm doing. And take it at my own pace. And so I think it's less of like this kind of old school where it's like, push, push, push, go, go go. It's like, yes, you do want to have that push, you know of yourself and push yourself further and get out of your comfort zone and all that. But doing it in a more healthy way, which is a cool trend. I hope it's not a trend, I hope it's here to stay. So I thought I'd go over some of the stuff that we were hearing in our podcast, some of the stuff that we do as well, that kind of help entrepreneurs to keep going because what's so sad is that people start their own businesses, and then they get overwhelmed. And they run themselves into the ground and they stop. And they give up and it doesn't have to be that way. So I thought we'd go over a few of these. So ideally, it's consistent, these practices, and I'm going to go over and please don't implement all of them. Well, it's like the other side of the scale. Like I'm like, Hey, take it easy, grow your business, but don't kill yourself. And then I'm like, do these 20 things like No, that's not what I'm saying. Just pick a couple that kind of speak to you. Okay, one or two, even Really? So ideally, you'd be consistent. So you do you do these daily or weekly. Doesn't have to be every day. But you know, they're on your list of things that you want to try to incorporate. Okay, if you like, do them every now and then once a quarter, it's like it's not really going to be super beneficial. So try to do them consistently if you can. Okay, first one, just move. Move your body. It's so important. I mean, most of us, you know, our jobs have us in front of a computer all day. Oh my gosh, I don't. I really don't think that was how the human body was meant to be just kind of sitting on our butts all day. So just move around. So ideally, it is a physical activity. Ideally, you're getting some sort of exercise. Me personally, I do CrossFit. So I do CrossFit. Typically five mornings a week, and I love it. It's just gives me it's just an outlet. It's an accomplishment, I do it after I get. So I'll just tell you my morning routine, okay, so I get up, and I get the kids up and I get them their breakfast and fill their water bottles, and I make sure they're in virtual school. So I make sure that they're on their, you know, zooms or whatever, right, they're all set up. Then I go to the gym, and I do my workout, and then I come home, and then I, you know, I'll check on them, typically, if they're not in a class, and then I start working, okay. And I should mention, though, when I'm driving to and from the gym, I'm listening to a podcast, it's typically a business podcast. So it's either geared toward entrepreneurs, or it's geared toward, I don't know, marketing. So it's something that I am like, learning something on my way to and from, it's kind of like school, it's my school, you know, my car is my classroom, right. And so, coming back and forth from the gym, that's what I'm listening to. So that's like my daily thing. What I want to get better about is writing my goals down, I used to do this, every day, I would write Actually, I would do gratitude. And I write my goals down every day, and I've gotten away from it. So I like to go back to that. Anyway, just move if you, if you can get yourself to work out at least 30 minutes. Amazing. If it's a walk around the block, great just move your body, and then move at each hour. So it's cool to have that physical activity where you're hopefully you're getting your heart rate up, and it's just great for your soul, great for your health. But other than that move every hour, especially if you're like me, or I'm in front of my computer all day. Okay. So move every hour, get up, walk around, get some water, you know, just kind of like your brain needs that break kind of a brain break, okay? It cannot. It should not, you know, just be like going going going all day if you kind of need that release. So every hour, take five minutes, and move around. We were talking to Paul Totoro, and one of our podcasts, he's a CPA, and he was telling us about this really insightful episode. It was about, you know, insights for small businesses as far as like, taxes and all that stuff goes, which is great. So tune in to that one. But he was like, I just play like a fun little game on my phone for a few minutes, you know, so that's cool to kind of like give your mind a break. So there we go. Okay. mindset check, oh my gosh, this is so important, especially if you're running your own business. Ah, so it's like, you can have so many negative thoughts that come into your brain, and we have to, like, fight them off. You know, I was like, pretend like, I'm Wonder Woman, I have like those like, bracelets or those cops, you know, and I'm like, get away. Because that head trash and that negative self talk. That's like, natural, you know, that's kind of the way we were biologically created is like, you know, we coat we go to those thoughts, because we were created, our bodies were created, our mind was created to, like, protect us. And if it's like, Okay, this is scary, this is something new, like, we're like, oh, we can't do that. We can't do that, like Who are we to do that, you know, we go into this, like, protection survival mode. And so you constantly have to be feeding your mind. positive things, you know, like, you can do this and kind of, like get that stuff away. So that can be done to journaling. So a lot of entrepreneurs were will journal and kind of get their thoughts down, and gratitude. So a lot of people will have gratitude journals, and they try to write down five things that they're grateful for that day. And it can be super small, it can be large, it can be whatever it can be, like, I'm grateful. For the sunny day today, we've been having clouds, you know, it could be something tiny that you're you're grateful for, but it kind of kind of puts you in check and and gives you that kind of that mindset shift of like, Okay, wait, look at all this great stuff is actually going right, you know, so that's something to try out. Goal setting. So writing your goals down, I think we've all heard that statistic. I think like goals are, I don't know, something crazy, like 80% more likely to be accomplished if you write them down. So that's another thing. It's like you want to have a map to where you're going. And you can't if you don't know where you're going. So writing your goals down. Some people say to write them down, even if they're the same goals every day, write them every day, so it's kind of ingrained in your mind. Okay, meditation, I do not do a meditation. So I can't really tell you how to do it. But I know a lot of people do and they enjoy it. So there was I did do it. I think once or twice my peloton app has like meditations in it and I was just like, I just need some time. And I did do it. So I don't know the ins and outs and if there's a correct way to do it, but we have had people tell us that meditating is a great way so if that's something that's your jam, maybe look it up and apply that and affirmations as well like stay Over and over positive sentiments, things you're going to accomplish like affirming you and your place and where you are. And where you're going is another thing that is was popular with a lot of people. So reading is huge too. So books, blogs, I read a lot a go digital app on my phone. And again, it's mostly nonfiction, it's mostly business books, it's mostly entrepreneurial focused is kind of my jam. And so that's what I read. But it's great to read books, even if it's just, you know, a few minutes a day or you know, a couple days a week just to continue to feed your mind that way as well. Okay, so podcasts so like I said, I'm going to and from the gym, I listened to a podcast for me, it's business for someone else. It might be mindset to kind of get their you know, mind, right, or somebody else that might be health, whatever it is that helps you and kind of gives you that fuel and energizes you and fills that tank. How many other car related examples Can I give? I don't know. Fill that tank, get that fuel. But anything that kind of like sets the stage for you to keep going toward your goals is huge. There's so many great podcasts out there. So take a listen to those. One good one is called Small Business big mindset. You might have heard of it. So yeah, so check out podcasts. And then lastly, rest. It's okay to rest and ask for help. Okay, so, like I said, at the beginning of this, I think there was this thing where it was like, Oh my gosh, like, it's almost like, when you're asking someone how they are. And if, if you don't say busy, then it's like you're failing, like, Oh, so busy, so much going on, you know, and it's like, it's okay, to rest, it's okay to take a break, your body needs that. And then you'll be better suited to face the next challenge that you're about to face. So I really do try to get between seven and eight hours of sleep every night. I know. It's crazy, right? Because a lot of people are like, Oh my god, I get like four or five hours, I'm working so hard. And it's like for me not sustainable. For me, it would not have even been able to have built what I built so far with this company. If I was kind of running on fumes, another car reference Look at me. So. So you got to make sure you get that sleep, nutrition, I actually should have put this in there too. So nutrition is huge as well. And make sure that you're feeding your body foods that are good for it to keep you going and asking for help. Oh my gosh, I really, I had to put this on here because I feel like so many of us, especially women, some men, of course, especially women, we feel like we're supposed to be able to do it. All right. If you have kids, you feel like you're supposed to be managing the kids. You're supposed to be doing great at your job, like everything, taking care of the family, like all this stuff, right. And even if you don't have kids, you still have that you probably still have that instilled in you like, everything's got to be cool. And on top of it, you know, and like, God forbid, I asked for help. It's like, please ask for help. You know, like, if you can afford to outsource stuff, outsource it, if you don't enjoy cleaning your house, like I know for some of it, some people it's like an outlet for them. And you can if you don't enjoy doing it, and you can afford to have someone come in and help you clean the house, please do. So if you don't like doing the yard work. And you can afford to have someone helping with that, please do so because then you can use that time for things that you do enjoy in your life, whether it is more time on your business or more time with your family, whatever that may be, do that. If you're a mom, and you have like our dad, and you have little kids around, you're like, Oh my gosh, I get so much done. If I just had someone to watch my kids, I can't afford to have someone come in and watch them. swap with someone else. You know, I mean, I know we're in COVID. And we have to be careful. But maybe there's a family that you quarantined with, you know, I you know, whatever your situation is. And so I'm just like, Where there's a will there's a way so ask for how take those risks. Okay, so I gave you a bunch of examples again, don't be like, okay, Aaron gave me all these now I have to apply them all? No, because that's the exact opposite of what I'm trying to get across today. So just take one or two, maybe start with one, you know that you're like, Okay, I can do that. That's kind of like an easy integration into your day. And that will kind of set you up pretty strong. Cool. Okay. Thanks for tuning in to the Small Business big mindset podcast. To keep the fun going.
