If you've been listening to this podcast or have tuned into my live trainings you know that I am all bout growing your email list. And not just growing your email list full of whatever emails you can get on it, but growing your email list full of targeted, actual people that you think will benefit from the information that you're giving them, and that might be interested n your products or services down the line once you develop a relationship.

I always say grow an email list, because growing an audience on just on Facebook, or Instagram or any of the other platforms comes with a long-term challenge. And it's a pretty big one. You don't own those platforms, right? So the if the algorithm changes again, which it will, if Zuckerberg or whoever decides to shut it down, you're screwed. Because you don't own those followers.

But your email list? That is your crew, those are your people. So I always teach people to start an email list and how to do it. And then some people are like, "That's awesome. But nobody is opening my emails."

So with that, is obviously your subject line is kind of like first line of defense, right?  Why write such amazing content that's really going to help people if it's just gonna kind of languish and collect dust in their inbox?

This podcast episode all about the email subject line. In this episode I'm teaching you the five qualities of super clickable email subject lines.  I also created a download that gives you all this information as well and a little activity to do to help you create an mail subject line bank, so that you can  pull from that when you need it.

Welcome to the Small Business big mindset Podcast, where we dive into tactical strategies to grow your business. And to make an impact on this world. A huge part of success is keeping your mindset and vision on track. So this is a major part of our process. And this podcast, let's do this. Hey, Erin here, welcome to the mall Business big mindset odcast. This is the first one hat we were doing on camera. So e shall see how this goes. But e figured maybe it'd be cool to ive you guys a version where ou see me actually recording t, some people are more visual nd like the video, so we will oad this up onto the YouTube. o you guys have both versions. o pardon me, if I do look at my otes, this is how I operate, I o have notes usually just have quick outline when I do a odcast. So just FYI. So and his episode, I'm going over the ive qualities of I can't open his fast enough email subject ines. Okay, so I'll just jump ight into it. So the first one s the element of surprise. And ctually, before we jump into t, I usually like to get right o the content, I want to give ou some background. So I am all bout growing your email list nd not just growing your email ist full of whatever emails you an get on it. But growing your mail list full of targeted, ctual people that you think ill benefit from the nformation that you're giving hem, that might be interested n your products or services own the line once you develop a elationship. So I always always lways say, grow an email list, ecause growing an audience on ust on Facebook, or Instagram r any of the other platforms, ou don't own those platforms, ight. So the if the algorithm hanges again, which it will, if uckerberg or whoever decides to hut it down, you're screwed, ight? Because you don't own hose followers, like they're on hat platform, but your email ist, that is your crew, those re your people. And so I always each people to how to start an mail list. And then some people re like, that's awesome. But obody's nobody is opening my mails. So with that, is bviously your subject line is ind of like it's like your irst line of defense, right? As ar as getting people to open our email and see all the mazing content that you have ritten, right. So why write uch amazing content that's eally going to help people if t's just gonna kind of languish n there and collect dust in heir inbox. So that's why I igured I will do a podcast pisode all about the email ubject line. And these are the ive qualities that email ubject lines typically will ave the ones that are like lickable, the ones that you lick on, when you see them in our inbox. So I actually also reated a download, that gives ou all this information as well nd a little activity to do to ind of get email subject lines ind of more in your routine and o help you actually create an mail subject line bank, right o that you can kind of pull rom that when you need it. kay, so now we can jump in. kay, so the first one is the lement of surprise. So an nexpected subject line can atch your reader off guard, in good way, right? The critical omponent to remember here is hat it should come off as rganic, not just for shock and we, don't just like put a ubject line to get someone's ttention, and then you're not ollowing up with it, right? You ant it to have substance. So his could be something from a ersonal experience, a rofessional situation, a dream, distant memory, each can stop our reader in their tracks and levate your email above the thers in their inbox. So an xample could be I woke up with ainbow hair and a small unicorn orn. I don't know about you, ut I'd be like, What in the orld, I need to know what's appening there. Or that time I ealized I hated x, you know, aybe you hate something that's opular. And people were like, ell, what is wrong with this erson? I need to open this mail and find out. And so hat's kind of the element of urprise. Like, what? That oesn't matter. I don't nderstand, you know. Okay, the econd one is intrigue. So it's ifferent. It's like the it's ike a surprises cousin right? ntrigue. So it's kind of like ave you ever been to a party nd you were circling the room nd then you hear something so ascinating that it stops you ou're like, what did that erson just say? I'm not in that onversation, but I heard it alking by you maybe you almost umped into the server with ads as the tray full of Prosecco, ight. It's so interesting. You onder like how can I like get yself on into this onversation? You want to hear ore so that my friend is what I all unique? It's It's It's nique. It's intrigue, you want o hear what's going on? So the ame is true in subject lines. t's so mesmerizing that you ave to know what happens next. You have zero choice, you must open that email. So some examples are, it was all fun and games until it ate my entire camera. Wait, what? I'm intrigued what age your camera or he dropped this bombshell after 56 years of marriage, you're like, first of all, 56 years of marriage, that's a long time. And what the heck did he say, right? Or maybe after spending $36,000, I realized this was a complete mistake. And you're like, what was a mistake, right? So it's kind of like, gives you some intrigue. It's sort of like a, like a cliffhanger. Okay, and then the next one, the third one is drop some knowledge. It's not just 90 slang, you can actually leverage the subject line to raise awareness, to make an impact, to educate, to drop some knowledge, right. So you could include a statistic, lesser known facts, or mentioned an action or a situation going on in the world. So this could take on a much more serious tone to if you want it. So could be nearly 13% of all adult cancers have this in common? Or these are the 10 countries with the worst water access. Or maybe here's my biggest lesson growing up in poverty, you know, so it could be something that's like, interesting, but also you're learning something to it. And so you're like, Okay, I want to learn more. So that's more of that kind of a, of a subject line there. Okay, moving right along. The fourth one is you're in their head. So not in a creepy way. But you want your reader to feel like you are speaking directly to them. Okay, so, and only to then, as if there's no one else on your email list. Okay. It's like, wow, they're speaking directly to me. And there's a sense of intimacy and email. So I compare it like this. Being at a party is kind of like what the social media vibe is like, right? grabbing a cup of coffee with a friend. That's email. Okay, so to take this further, you can personalize the subject line with their first name. So some examples might be, are you coming? Aaron, we're about to start. I've gotten some of those. And I'm like, maybe what's going on, you know, click on it. Or I saw these and immediately thought of you. Or this happened, and I knew only you would understand, right? They're speaking directly to you. And you're kind of like, Huh, okay, well, I want to know more like, what did you see that reminded you of me? Like, even though you know, realistically, it's a group of people, but still, you're on an email list for a reason. And so that target audience, whoever they're writing to, you're like, Okay, well, I'm part of that audience. They're talking to me. And so they know what I like, because I'm on an email list for a reason. So what did they find that they think I should know about? I'm interested in that. And then the fifth and final one, I'm going to go over that on this training is that it gives you all the fields right. So this can be a variety of things, it can be tugging at the heartstrings, it can be a sense of empowerment, it can also inspire, it can shock or can outrage you into action. So most of the time, this type of subject line appeals to your heart more than your head. So it could be something that motivates you to reach your goal, or propel you into action to right or wrong. It plays on human emotion to make the connection. So some examples could be the words hospiscare rang in my ears, or why haven't you been to a protest? Or she was out of jail again, and he was terrified. Okay, right. So all of those can kind of they pull out something that you're like, Okay, I want to know more. You know, hospice care is awful What happened? Or like, you know, kind of calling you out, why haven't you been to a protest? Why have you participated in that, and it's like, well, Hey, wait a minute, maybe get a little defensive. And you want to click on that, and see what's going on. So I like to say that a subject line is akin to an eavesdropping that intrigues, right, it's just kind of like when you're thinking of your subject lines, kind of think of that, it's like, if someone heard this in passing, they would want to know more, right? So they want to click on it and and find out more of what, what's going on. And so, in the download that I'll put the link on this page, but there's kind of subject line buckets that can help you do a brain dump and come up with your your own subject lines, and that help you create a bank of it. And I have an activity on the download as well to kind of like a 30 day subject line challenge to help kind of get this into your routine. So I really appreciate you guys tuning in.
